CH3CH2OH and CH3COOH
How do I know which atom is the higher boiling point? The only thing I understand is that these molecules both have hydrogen bonds, but what do I do next to differentiate them?
Is it correct to say that the relative molecule mass of CH3COOH (=48) is higher than the relative molecuul mass of CH3CH2OH (=46) and that therefore the boiling point of CH3COOH is higher?
Also you can say that CH3COOH has stronger/more dipole dipole interactions between the COOH group, while CH3CH2OH only has the single dipole dipole interaction of H and O (=hydrogen bond). Is this method of reasoning correct?
